This series consists of five landscape-format works, each presenting the same composition of fifteen cutaway blocks. While the form remains consistent, each piece is carved from a different natural stone: Belgian Blue Stone (also known as Belgian Fossil), Travertine, Mediterranean Green, Napoleon Brown, and Musschelkalk.
The configuration of the blocks refers directly to a wooden toy set that has long served as a recurring source of inspiration in my practice. This work is a direct homage to that original set: the fifteen blocks shown here represent the complete collection. The title, I–XV, reflects this structure, numbering the blocks sequentially from left to right.
All stones were sourced from leftover material at the marble company I frequently collaborate with. While the finished surfaces may suggest a precise, machine-made process, the making involved significant manual work. Many of the openings were too narrow for machines, requiring extensive hand-sanding to achieve the final result.
All five works, along with detailed photographs, are included in the slideshow.
